Plants annual or perennial, rhizomatous or not. Leaves: distal leaf sheaths without a tooth. Achenes prominent, apex often constricted proximal to tubercle. Tubercles not dorsiventrally compressed, similar in cross section to achene.

Distribution

Tropical to temperate latitudes worldwide, primarily neotropical.

Discussion

Species ca. 12 (3 in the flora).
