It is often included in Fanicum, the two taxa being similar in gross morphology. Recent molecular data reinforce the morphological arguments for recognizing <i>Dichanthelium</i> as a distinct genus.</p><!--
--><p>When the branches of <i>Dichanthelium</i> develop, in late summer or fall, the culms acquire a very different aspect; comments about the 'fall phase' refer to the appearance of the plant or its culms following this branching.
