Herbs, perennial. Leaves cauline, alternate; sheath absent; blade simple, linear to filiform, margins entire, 1-veined. Inflorescences: solitary flowers that appear lateral. Flowers bisexual, radially symmetric; sepals 3, sepaloid, distinct, equal; petals 3, petaloid, distinct, equal; stamens 3; staminodes absent; anthers dehiscing by apical pores or porelike slits; ovary superior, 3-carpellate, 1-locular; ovules 2-seriate; styles 1, simple; stigmas 1, simple or slightly 3-fid. Fruits loculicidal capsules. Seeds: embryotega present.

Distribution

3 in warm temperate to tropical America and 1 in West Africa.

Discussion

Genera 1, species ca. 4 (1 species in the flora).
