Herbs probably biennial; from stout roots. Stems erect, branched or unbranched. Inflorescences wandlike, nodding. Flowers 4-merous, nearly actinomorphic, opening near sunrise; floral tube 6–17 mm; petals white, slightly unequal; filaments without basal scales. Capsules erect in age, ovoid, somewhat flattened, 4-angled, valves with raised midrib and conspicuous lateral veins; sessile. 2n = 14.
