Etymology: Greek tropaion, trophy, alluding to a tree trunk on which were fixed the shields and helmets of defeated enemies Linnaeus was reminded of this on seeing the type species growing on a post, the leaves representing the shields and the flowers the helmets

Leaves: blade orbiculate or reniform [palmately lobed or divided]. Pedicels axillary. Flowers relatively large, torus cupuliform. x = 14.

Distribution

Introduced; Mexico, Central America, South America, introduced also in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia.

Discussion

Species ca. 90 (1 in the flora).
