Stems puberulent, hairs soft, sometimes stiff; branches from distal to base, ascending. Spikes 5–15 cm. Flowers: corolla tube densely tomentose. Seeds 2–3 mm. 2n = 28.
Phenology: Flowering Jul–Nov.
Habitat: Coastal salt marshes.
Elevation: 0–10 m.

Discussion
Plants of subsp. molle appear to lose their leaves earlier than those of subsp. hispidum.
