Annuals. Leaves mostly basal, seldom cauline; mostly alternate, sometimes opposite; blades simple or 1–2-pinnately lobed. Calyculi of (3–)5–8 bractlets. Phyllaries 5–8. Ray florets (5–)8(–12+), pistillate, fertile; laminae yellow, ± obovate or flabellate, each broadest distal to middle, apices entire or 2–3-toothed. Disc florets 8–60(–100+); corollas yellow (to orange), lobes 5; style-branch apices ± truncate or deltoid. Paleae oblong or lanceolate to linear. Cypselae ± oblong to spatulate, wings ± corky to chartaceous, entire, ± spreading, not ciliolate, faces smooth or ± tuberculate; pappi 0 or coroniform (0.1–0.2 mm). x = 12.

The name Coreopsis sect. Leptosyne has been misattributed to S. F. Blake, Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts 49: 341. 1913.
