Leaves: distals distinctly smaller than proximals. Flowers: corolla red to scarlet, 22–30 mm; stamens: longer pair exserted, pollen sacs 0.8–1.3 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering May–Aug.
Habitat: Rock outcrops, talus slopes.
Elevation: 500–3500 m.

Discussion

Variety newberryi is known from the Sierra Nevada from northern to south-central California and adjacent northwestern Nevada.
