Lower sheaths and culms densely tomentose, hairs 0.4-0.6 mm.

Discussion

Achnatherum lemmonii subsp. pubescens is restricted to serpentine soils in southern California. Barkworth and Linman (1984) rejected </i>subsp.<i> pubescens, not appreciating that it differed in having tomentose, rather than pubescent, culms.
