Stems glabrous, rarely retrorsely hairy. Leaves: axillary fascicles present, sometimes absent; cauline 10–55 × 0.5–6 mm. Thyrses: axis glabrous. Flowers: calyx lobes obovate to oblanceolate, rarely lanceolate.


Phenology: Flowering Apr–Jul.
Habitat: Grasslands, chaparral, sagebrush shrublands, pine woodlands.
Elevation: 50–1600 m.

Discussion

Variety heterophyllus occurs through much of western California from Humboldt County to San Diego County.
