Stems erect or diffusely spreading, 2.5–7 dm. Principal leaves (1.5–)2–5 cm; leaflets 5 or 7, blades (6–)9–20(–24) mm. Spikes ± loosely flowered, 6–8 mm diam.; axis becoming partially visible, 1–5(–7.5) cm; bracts 2.5–4 mm. Calyces: tube usually pubescent, sometimes glabrous, with 1 or 2 small glands between ribs. Epistemonous petals: blades 2.3–3.1 × 1.1–2.6 mm. 2n = 14.
Phenology: Flowering late spring–fall.
Habitat: Prairies, roadsides.
Elevation: 400–1300 m.

Discussion
In Texas, var. oligophylla is known from the northwestern half of the state, including the trans-Pecos region.
