Herbs diffuse to erect. Spikes densely flowered, 10–13(–15) mm diam.; axis not visible, 0.5–5 cm; bracts narrowly ovate- to lanceolate-acuminate, 3.5–5.5 × 1.2–2 mm. 2n = 14.
Phenology: Flowering spring, late summer–fall.
Habitat: Rocky soils, open grasslands, open oak or juniper woodlands, mostly on limestone.
Elevation: 300–1200 m.

Discussion
Variety carnescens most often grows in alkaline soils and is found in southeastern and central Arizona, southern New Mexico, and Texas, especially in the trans-Pecos, Edwards Plateau, and Rio Grande valley regions.
