Leaflets 7 or 9. Racemes 4–9-flowered. Flowers: calyx tube 1.8–2.4 mm, lobes 0.6–1.2 mm; corolla bicolored, banner and keel tips purple-maculate; banner 7.2–9.6 × 3.5–5(–5.4) mm. Legumes (15–)18–30 mm. Seeds 8–12. 2n = 22.
Phenology: Flowering Apr–early Jun.
Habitat: Meadows, chaparral, on or near serpentine outcrops.
Elevation: 300–600 m.

Discussion
Two closely related entities are morphologically similar to var. jepsonianus: Astragalus claranus (fruits on a gynophore, generally curved), and A. tener var. tener (fruits round basally, usually less than 16 mm versus usually greater than 18 mm). Removing plants now classified as A. tener var. ferrisiae from A. rattanii var. jepsonianus, where they were included by R. C. Barneby (1964), means that var. jepsonianus is characterized by wrinkled or pitted seeds, upright pedicels, and fruits that are straight or incurved, 1.5–3.5 cm, and shortly pseudostipitate (A. Liston 1990).
