Leaves: petiole 40–120 mm, usually 2 times longer than sub­tended peduncle; leaflet blades elliptic to oblanceolate. Pedun­cles 1–3.5 cm, less than 1/2 as long as subtending petiole, appressed-pubescent. Seed usu­ally red-brown, rarely gray.


Phenology: Flowering spring–early summer.
Habitat: Sandy soils, grasslands, open woodlands.
Elevation: 0–1700 m.

Discussion

Variety hypogaeum is known from Cascade and Rosebud counties in Montana southward through mostly eastern counties in Wyoming, far western Nebraska (Deuel and Sioux counties), eastern Colorado, western Kansas and Oklahoma, to central new Mexico and central Texas. It is uncommon within its range but more prevalent in the southern states of its distribution.
