Leaflets 7–17(or 19), blades linear-oblanceolate or linear-oblong, 3–7 mm. Calyces usually pubescent throughout.
Phenology: Flowering late spring–early summer.
Habitat: Clay or sandy soils, talus in canyons, mixed desert shrub communities.
Elevation: 1100–1600 m.

Discussion
Variety whitingii is known from San Juan County, Utah, from near Monument Valley westward to Navajo Mountain, and disjunctly in Wupatki National Monument, Coconino County, Arizona.
