Discussion

The range of var. emoryanus is unusual and tripartite: Kane County, Utah, and northern Arizona; central New Mexico, western Texas, and southward to Nuevo León, Mexico; and Maverick County in the Rio Grande Valley and more or less continuously to near the mouth of the Rio Grande. In the Big Bend region of Texas and adjacent Mexico, it sometimes occurs with var. terlinguensis, without apparent hybridization.
