Discussion

Variety newberryi occurs in northern and central Arizona (extending southwestward to Yavapai County), southwestern Colorado (Montezuma County), northwestern New Mexico (McKinley and San Juan counties), and southeastern Utah (Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties).

Plants described as var. escalantinus typically have narrowly elliptic (not ovate to elliptic-obovate) leaflets, differing in no other way from var. newberryi. Occasional intermediates are known. The range of the phase with narrow leaflets is contiguous, and partially sympatric, with that of var. newberryi.
