Peduncles (4–)6–26(–30) cm. Racemes (10–)20–50-flowered; axis (2–)3.5–13(–16) cm in fruit. Flowers 11.5–15.4 mm. Legumes not or slightly compressed, bladdery-inflated or strongly tumid, lateral faces convexly rounded, symmetric or, sometimes, strongly oblique, fusiform-ellipsoid or semi-ellipsoid, (13–)15–35 × (5–)6–10(–13) mm, sutures equally convex or dorsally low-convex, ventrally straight, usually glabrous, very rarely strigulose; gynophore 6.5–17 mm, minutely pubescent.
Phenology: Flowering Mar–Jun (fall–winter).
Habitat: Shale or sandstone outcrops on sea bluffs or low grassy hills.
Elevation: 10–90(–700) m.

Discussion
Variety trichopodus is known from three restricted areas in southern California from Kern and San Luis Obispo counties southward to San Diego County.
