Plants 5–30(–36) cm, villous; from rhizomelike or stolonif­erous, branched caudex. Stems erect or ascending, (0–)1–12+ cm underground, villous. Leaves (2–)3–12 cm; stipules distinct, subterranean ones often fully amplexicaul but distinct, 7–15 mm, foliose at distal nodes; leaflets (5–)7–13(–15), blades elliptic, oblong or lanceolate-elliptic, 10–30(–35) mm, pinnately veined, apex obtuse to rounded, surfaces sparsely villosulous or villous abaxially, glabrous adaxially. Peduncles erect, 3–9.8 cm, usually longer than subtending leaf. Racemes appearing subumbellate, loosely 5–11-flowered; axis 1–5 cm in fruit; bracts (1.5–)2.5–3.8 mm; bracteoles 0. Pedicels 1.5–5 mm. Flowers 13–19 mm; calyx cam­panulate to subcylindric, 7.5–8.8 mm, villosulous, tube 6.3–8 mm, lobes broadly triangular, 0.6–0.8 mm; corolla yellowish with whitish margins, banner sometimes purple bordered white, keel 13.2–16 mm. Legumes green becoming brown, ± straight, ovoid, inflated, 15–21 × 5.5–8 mm, papery-membranous, black-pilose, hairs to 0.5 mm; stipe 5–7 mm, pubescent. Seeds 6–10. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Arctic and alpine tundra, mead­ows, heath, woods, riparian areas.
Elevation: 10–2000 m.
