Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted. Stems ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm. Leaves basal and cauline; leaflet blades 10–25 mm, surfaces hairy. Peduncles 1–6 cm (together with racemes 2–10 cm); bract 2–3.5 mm. Racemes 2–10 cm, not exserted beyond leaves, or only partially so, loose. Pedicels 2.5–4 mm. Flowers in 6–9 whorls, 7–10 mm; corolla bluish, banner not or scarcely recurved, 2.5–3 mm wide. 2n = 48.

Habitat: Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum.
Elevation: 1300–1500 m.

Discussion

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.
