Herbs (1–)1.5–4 dm; caudex superficial, divisions closely tufted, not rhizomelike. Stems incurved-ascending, not hollow. Leaflets 6–9(–12), blades 10–40(–45) mm, surfaces abaxially with spreading hairs, adaxially glabrous or mar­ginally hairy. Flowers: upper keel margins ± sparsely ciliate. 2n = 48.


Phenology: Flowering (Apr–)May–Jun(–Jul).
Habitat: Sagebrush scrub, arid microhabitats.
Elevation: 1000–2500 m.

Calif., Idaho, Nev., Oreg., Wash.

Discussion

Variety saxosus is known from the Modoc Plateau in northeastern California, eastern and northern Nevada, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and southwestern Idaho.
