Trees to 14 m. Leaves 12–27.5 cm; petiole 1.5–4 cm; leaflet blades ovate or obovate to elliptic, 2–8 × 1–6 cm, base cuneate, apex acute or attenuate, surfaces pubescent abaxially, glabrescent adaxially. Racemes 4–13.5 × 2–4 cm; bracteoles triangular-ovate, 1.2–2.3 × 0.2–0.5 mm, pubescent. Pedicels 3–9 mm. Flowers: calyx 1.9–4.5 mm; corolla: banner blade 4.7–6.9 mm, apex emarginate, callus thick and cartilaginous, claw 1.5–5.1 mm; wing and keel blades 5.4–7.8 × 2.1–3.3 mm. Legumes symmetric, 4–7.3 × 0.8–1.4 cm, suture wing 0.2–0.6 mm wide. Seeds 5.5–7.1 × 3.1–3.8 mm. 2n = 18.

Habitat: Disturbed secondary forests.
Elevation: 90–110 m.

Discussion

Maackia buergeri is widely cultivated, although not as commonly as M. amurensis Maximowicz & Ruprecht. The latter species can be distinguished from the former by its glabrous petioles and the wider wings (to 1.4 mm) on its fruits.
