Stems sparsely strigose; prickles straight, whitish. Leaves: stipules lanceolate-ovate or ligulate, 2–3 mm, striate, usually puberulent, rarely glabrescent; petiole 0.2–0.7(–1.5) cm; primary rachis 1–6.5 cm; pinnae 4–7(or 8) pairs; leaflets 16–30 pairs, blades obliquely linear, 3–9 × 0.5–1.2 mm, apex acute to apiculate, abaxial surface pubescent to strigulose. Peduncles 1.5–3.5 cm. Capitula 10–15 mm diam.; bracts oblanceolate, 1/4–1/2 corolla length. Flowers: calyx campanulate, 1/5–1/4 corolla length; corolla lobes sparsely strigose or glabrous. Legumes stipitate, (30–)40–65(–75) × 9–11(–13) mm, segments (4–)7–10(–14), margin sparsely strigose and puberulent, apex mucronate to cuspidate, faces sparsely strigose and puberulent; stipe 3–7 mm. Seeds 5–5.3 × 2.3–3 × 0.8–1 mm.


Phenology: Flowering (Jan–)Mar–Aug(–Oct); fruiting Mar–Sep(–Nov).
Habitat: Disturbed areas near canals, edges of ponds.
Elevation: 0–400 m.

Discussion

Variety asperata is found in southernmost Texas in Calhoun, Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Zapata counties.
