Herbs to 7.5 dm; with fusi­form taproot. Stems appressed-pubescent, glabrescent. Leaves usually pinnately 3-foliolate, sometimes unifoliolate or palmately 5–7-foliolate; stip­ules long-triangular to linear, 4–6 mm; petiole usually 5–70 mm; leaflet blades elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, 40–80 × 6–15 mm, surfaces ± glandular-punctate, sparsely pubescent. Peduncles 3–10 cm. Inflorescences columnar, 2–6 cm. Flowers 8–10 mm; calyx 5–7 mm, glandular-punctate, sparsely pubescent; corolla purple, banner oblanceolate. Legumes 4–6 × 3–5 mm, glandular-punctate, rugose. Seeds depressed-obovate, 3–4 mm.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jun.
Habitat: Sandy soils, marshy areas.
Elevation: 0–400 m.

Discussion

A collection by Buckley labeled as from Carlyle, Illinois, at GH may be mislabeled; Orbexilum simplex is not known to occur so far north (J. W. Grimes 1990).
