Plants usually robust. Leaves 3–7 cm; rachis 0.5–1.4 cm, usually shorter than longest leaflet; leaflets 5–9, congested on rachis, (8–)10–21 mm. Peduncles erect, 8–12 cm, usually surpassing leaves, axis usually 0.5–2 cm in fruit. Racemes 5–14-flowered, subcapitate at anthesis. Calyces 9–10.5 mm, hispid-hirsute, hairs ascending-spreading. Corollas 19–24 mm. Legumes short-stipitate, scarcely to strongly inflated.
Phenology: Flowering spring–early summer.
Habitat: Hilltops, banks, bluffs.
Elevation: 1500–2500 m.

Discussion
Variety ventosa is restricted to the drainages of the Green, Platte, and Wind rivers of central and southern Wyoming and northeastern Utah, and northward to Clark’s Fork, the drainage of the Bighorn River, and the Yellowstone River, Montana.
