Herbs 10–20 cm; rhizomatous; roots usually not thickened, if so, then crown of rhizomes above thickened portion. Inflo­rescences 28–32-flowered, ellip­soid, 3–3.2 cm diam. Pedicels (at least proximal, usually all) strongly reflexed in fruit, proximal more strongly re­flexed than distal, stout, to 1 mm. Flowers 14–16 mm; calyx usually glabrous, rarely very sparsely hairy; corolla lavender, banner apex acute or acuminate. 2n = 48.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jun.
Habitat: Montane forests.
Elevation: 400–2300 m.

Discussion

Subspecies caurinum is found in central and western Washington, with populations in Oregon in the northeast and northwest, as well as in scattered sites elsewhere.
