Herbs 10–17 cm; rhizomatous; roots usually not thickened, if so, then crown of rhizomes above thickened portion. Inflorescences 18–22-flowered, globose, 2.2–2.5 cm diam. Pedicels (at least proximal, usually all) strongly reflexed in fruit, proximal more strongly reflexed than distal, stout, to 1 mm. Flowers 10–13 mm; calyx sparsely hairy; corolla purple, sometimes tips white, banner apex acute or acuminate.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jun.
Habitat: Open gravelly places to upper limit of Pinus monticola.
Elevation: 1200–2800 m.

Discussion

Subspecies shastense occurs in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity counties.
