Stipules 0.5–1 cm. Leaflet blades thin. Peduncles slender or slightly thickened. Inflores­cences globose or ovoid, 1.4–2.4 cm. Involucres: bracteoles relatively short, obtuse. Flowers 12–17 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Alpine tundra, meadows, grassy slopes, open areas of forests.
Elevation: 2700–4100 m.

Discussion

Subspecies montanense is known from Fremont County in Idaho; Carbon, Gallatin, Madison, and Park counties in Montana; Daggett, Duchesne, Grand, Rich, San Juan, Summit, Uintah, and Wasatch counties in Utah; and Hot Springs and Park counties in Wyoming.
