Herbs densely villous, especially calyces; roots cylindric, thick­ened, branched, often rhizome­like, not predominantly fusiform-tuberous. Leaflet blades of basal leaves linear or linear-elliptic, of median leaves broadly elliptic, apex acute, surfaces densely hairy adaxially. Flowers: calyx lobes usually purple, contorted, abaxial lobes longer, lateral lobes 1–1.5 times tube; corolla white, cream, or purple; ovules 3 or 4.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Open pine forests, riverbanks, clearings, wet meadows.
Elevation: 1800–2300 m.

Subspecies villiferum ranges from west-central Utah to east-central Nevada.
